And the puzzles in the game’s huge, painterly world are pretty terrific, too. Once I’d figured out how to deal with the titular – and sometimes frustratingly obstinate – creature, I absolutely loved watching the evolving relationship between boy and beast, which is as authentic as any I’ve seen between two characters in a game.
The need to put effort into liking a game is an odd thing, but the struggle is worth it. I had to work to enjoy this poetic adventure about a boy and his growing friendship with a giant cat-bird-dog monster.
